The Trecena of Q’anil

Welcome to the Trecena of Q’anil, a sacred 13-day journey in the Cholq’ij Mayan calendar devoted to the seed, fertility, creativity, & the abundant fruit of our lives & efforts. Q’anil is one of the most beloved & meaningful nawales in the Maya cosmovision, holding within it the complete cycle of life, from conception to harvest. It is the energy of growth, blossoming, & potential fulfilled.

The Trecena of Q’anil takes place from April 25th to May 7th, 2025
The Trecena of Q’anil takes place from April 25th to May 7th, 2025

This trecena invites us to honor the seeds we carry — literal, spiritual, emotional, & creative. These may be seeds we have planted in the past that are now ripening, or brand-new intentions taking root. In Mayan tradition, the seed is not only a symbol of potential, but a divine embodiment of life’s promise, interconnection, & continuity. Every seed carries encoded wisdom, a dream gifted from the Creator, waiting for the right conditions to grow. The glyph for Q’anil, often placed at the center of sacred fires, represents this seed — shimmering with golden light & surrounded by prayers, blessings, & songs.

As we enter this trecena, we are walking with the energy of maturity & readiness. The time of waiting is over — now is the moment to gather the fruit of what has been lovingly nurtured. Yet, Q’anil also reminds us that endings & beginnings are inseparable. Every fruit contains seeds. Every harvest is a moment to offer gratitude while also planting for the future. This is a time to celebrate the beauty of the natural world, the joy of fertility, the abundance of Spirit, & to prepare the ground for what comes next.

Prayer for the Trecena of Q’anil

Blessed Q’anil, Sacred Seed of Life,

Guide us in these 13 days of ripening.

May we nurture the seeds of our dreams,

Tending them with love, patience, & devotion.

May we walk with gratitude for the harvests past,

& courage for the ones yet to come.

Bless our children, our gardens, our projects,

That all may flourish with abundance & light.

May we honor the Earth who receives our seeds,

& the Sky who blesses them with rain & sun.

May we live in harmony with all life,

& remember that within each ending lies a new beginning.

In the name of the ancestors,

& the generations to come,

We give thanks.

The Sacred Seed

Q’anil is represented with the color yellow & the ripened maize that is the foundation of life in Mesoamerica. The Maya people refer to themselves as the children of maize — Ixim Achi — because in their creation story, humans were fashioned from sacred corn dough. The entire agricultural calendar is interwoven with the cycles of Q’anil, from the sowing of seeds to the festivals of harvest. Corn, to the Maya, is not merely food, but it is life itself. Corn is sacred, & each kernel holds the memory of ancestors and the promise of generations to come.

In Mayan language, "Q’an" means yellow or ripe, and the suffix "-il" means "that which is becoming." Thus, Q’anil is the essence of ripening — it is everything that comes into full bloom, the moment before the harvest.

As Q’anil teaches, we are both the gardener & the garden. Every word we speak, every thought we think, & every act of love or creativity is a seed. Let us sow wisely & joyfully.

The Essence of the Trecena of Q’anil

Q’anil represents fertility, growth, beauty, completion, & abundance. The energy of this nawal is deeply rooted in the Earth & the cycles of life. It governs procreation, creativity, artistic talent, & the rewards of sustained effort. This is the time when the fruits of your labor begin to shine — whether those fruits are children, ideas, relationships, projects, or inner growth.

In this trecena, we are also reminded of the spiritual essence of the rabbit, Q’anil’s totem animal. In Maya tradition, the rabbit represents fertility, playfulness, agility, & abundance. It is linked with the Moon, dreams, & mysticism. To dream of a rabbit may indicate swift manifestation, divine fertility, or a message from the unseen realms. Among the Maya & many Native American traditions, the rabbit symbolizes cleverness, vigilance, & life’s creative abundance. With the rabbit as its animal totem, it is a symbol of fertility, joy, abundance, playfulness, & rapid growth. The rabbit reminds us that prosperity can arrive quickly when the ground is well prepared.

Q’anil is the nawal that supports:

  • Fertility & procreation

  • The blossoming of ideas, projects, & intentions

  • The sweetness of life & the rewards of labor

  • Spiritual abundance & fulfillment

  • Healing & regeneration of the Earth

  • Vitality, joy, & connection with children

This trecena also reminds us of the importance of patience & care. Just as a seed cannot be rushed to bloom, our projects & dreams require nurturing, protection, & time. Q’anil teaches us that the journey to abundance includes moments of stillness, deep listening, & celebration of each stage.

Let this trecena be a sacred period where you honor your creative life force, bless the seeds you’ve sown, & step fully into your divine harvest!

~ Blessings!
