About the Greater Chaco Region: Between 850 CE and 1250 CE, ancestral Pueblo people, who occupied Chaco Canyon over a span of 400 years, produced remarkable archeological structures and developed a complex civilization that included a network of roads, trade routes, and an in-depth knowledge of astronomy. Today, Indigenous Nations including the 20 Pueblo Nations in New Mexico and Texas, Hopi Tribe, and Navajo Nation hold strong cultural and spritual ties to landscape.I The Greater Chaco region is internationally recognized as a UNESCO World Hertiage site. It also recently made the "America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places" list by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Preserving Chaco Canyon and the Greater Chaco Region : Nestled in the San Juan Basin in northwestern New Mexico is Chaco Canyon (recognized as the Chaco Culture National Historical Park) within the sacred landscape known as the Greater Chaco Region. Between 850 CE and 1250 CE, ancestral Pueblo people, who occupied Chaco Canyon over a span of 400 years, produced remarkable archeological structures and developed a complex civilization that included a network of roads, trade routes, and an in-depth knowledge of astronomy. These achievements continue to amaze modern scholars and experts. Following their time at Chaco Canyon, ancestral Pueblo people migrated to their present homelands, and these migration routes also hold many important cultural resources. Today, the Pueblos maintain deep cultural ties to Chaco Canyon and the Greater Chaco Region through pilgrimage, song, and prayer. The Greater Chaco Region holds profound cultural importance for many Indigenous people in the Southwest, including the Pueblos, the Hopi Tribe, the Navajo Nation, and other Indian Tribes, affirming Chaco Canyon and the Greater Chaco Region’s rich heritage and unparalleled significance. Threats to Chaco Canyon : Presently, Chaco Canyon and the Greater Chaco Region are under significant threat from those who seek to extract deposits of oil, gas, and minerals for energy development. Primarily, because it is not a normal relationship, as there is a huge power imbalance Depending on how advanced the teacher is, there is tremendous faith needed from both the student and sometimes from the teacher. A student needs to have faith that the teacher has something to teach you and that they have reached a certain spiritual level that they won’t take advantage of the power difference between you. And faith that as the student, you will follow the spiritual guidance and practices given to you by the teacher. How do we navigate this relationship ? How do we trust in our judgement ? How do we choose a spiritual teacher ?
